We’ve used a few different Diabetes testing kits over the last three years, mostly whatever insurance will cover. However, there have a been a few times when we didn’t get insurance filed in time or insurance took longer than we had supplies for. When that happened, we had to buy our own testing kit and let me tell you – they can be expensive!
But, when you have diabetes, monitoring your blood sugar is the best way to keep track of whether your readings are high, low, or in the average range. Studies have shown that long term good control of blood sugar levels can prevent diabetic complications from occurring.
When you have to look for and buy your own testing kit, you want one that’s known for its accuracy like the Bayer Contour NEXT EZ Meter.
You’ll receive this electronic meter in the kit. It’s a pocket size meter that can easily be held in the palm of your hand. The meter has a wide, easy to read screen that holds all the pertinent data. On the front of the screen, you’ll see a line that will let you know what the current date is – followed by the time.
Once you take your reading, the number of the reading will show up in large easy to read numbers on the center of the screen. This measure is shown in mg/dl. After the information is taken, it’s stored in the meter so that you can refer back to it for your own records or have it on hand to show your doctor how your numbers have been. All you have to do is press the memory recall button shown as a large M on the bottom of the meter to pull up the information.
Along with the meter, in this kit you’ll receive a lancing device. This device is about the size of a small pen and is easy to load and unload. All you have to do is twist off the top of it to insert a fresh lance or remove the old one. After you have the lance loaded, you simply press the button on the front of the lancing device.
The kit comes with a box of 100 lancets. The lancets are 30 gauge and come with easy to remove twist off caps. As you remove an old lancet from your lancing device, you can cap it with the top from the new lance and dispose of it so that when it’s in the garbage, the needle is not exposed.
Along with the lancets, you’ll also receive two boxes of 50 test strips so that you get a total of 100 strips. For the price of the kit, this is an extremely good deal since strips can be the most expensive part of a kit when purchased separately.
These strips have a reading end and a collecting end. The wider end slides into the slot at the bottom of the meter while the rounded end is what you press against your finger after you’ve lanced it. The blood sample is drawn up through the strip and the meter reads it.
Before you start to use the meter, you’ll want to set up a test control. The solution to do this is also included in the kit. This is a step that simply makes sure the meter gives you accurate readings each time. Each of the items in the kit is good for at least 18 months, but you’ll likely go through the test strips quickly if you test 3 or more times per day.
You’ll also get a handy carrying case so that you can take the meter, some lancets, strips and the lancing device with you whenever you’re not at home.
Overall, this diabetes test kit is worth the price. We’ve bought less expensive types in the past in a pinch, but some of them cost nearly as much as this whole kit and came with many less test strips or none at all.
