Eating low carb at the holidays can seem like a real challenge because we are usually surrounded by a range of sweet treats as we attend parties and host family gatherings at our house.
Everyone brings all sorts of sugary goodies into school or the office to share in order to help everyone get into the holiday spirit, putting temptation under your nose at every turn.
If you are worried about eating outside of your home because you are afraid you will not be able to stick to your low carb lifestyle, your best strategy is to master a few simple but festive low carb dishes that you will be able to take with you anywhere.
If the party is at your house, then you get to prepare some filling low carb appetizers, or an entire buffet of low carb foods. They will be so tasty that chances are your guests will never even know what they are missing.
You can get inspiration from the Atkins and other low carb recipes online, finding festive finger foods that add color and flavor to your holiday gathering.
- Consider creating mini skewers with mozzarella cheese balls as the base, and topped with grape tomatoes and wedges of green pepper.
- Serve homemade guacamole and/or salsa with celery scoops or cucumber wedges for another colorful and festive dish.
- There are plenty of low-carb and paleo/keto desserts too.
You can also get inspiration from permitted low carb snacks that you are allowed to eat as part of the Atkins Induction and Balancing Phases.
Almost any kind of cheese is a suitable snack. Eat as is, or bake into cheese crisps or cheese straws with the help of some almond or soy flour. Stuff some celery sticks with cream cheese and add a sprinkle of paprika for color and taste. You can also sprinkle some nuts on top for even more flavor, fiber and crunch.
Nuts, if you are not allergic, make an excellent, filling low carb party food. Eat as is, or lightly toss them with some oil and your favorite seasonings, such as hickory salt, for your own Smokehouse almonds for a fraction of the cost.
Walnuts help lower cholesterol naturally, and go well with most cheeses and fruits. Macadamia nuts are a common Christmas treat, though they can be expensive if you do not buy them at one of the popular warehouse stores. They are full of fiber and have a satisfying creamy flavor. A few go a long way to helping you feel full.
Hardboiled eggs are a standard low carb snack. Dress them up as deviled eggs, or make into salad to stuff your celery with or use to top cucumber or beet slices.
Fruit in moderation is permitted on Phase 2 of Atkins. Use berries like raspberries and strawberries to decorate your appetizer platters or create a rainbow of low carb fruits as the centerpiece of your party table for an attractive presentation containing quick sweet party foods to eat.
My favorite is to add one-quarter cup of each (which has 3 to 5 grams of net carbs) to crystal cups for each person to choose. Then, provide a creamy yogurt or peanut-butter based dip with to make them even more yummy!
A vegetable platter can be colorful and satisfying when paired with one or more dips. Homemade ranch, sour cream and onion, and so on, are all rich in taste but low in carbs.
